In the third largest European port there are some 300 kilometers of rail tracks, the biggest port network in Europe. 200 goods trains with over 5,500 wagons use it daily, ensuring the safe transport of goods. To avoid environmental damage, OIL-EX absorption mats from Calenberg have been installed for many years in the parking lots of diesel locomotives. The easily-installed mats bind any leaking fluids in the absorption layer, especially diesel and other oils, so that they cannot pollute the soil. The OIL-EX mat can absorb up to 10 liters per m2 and so ensures long-lasting protection from environmental damage. When the mats have reached their maximum absorption capacity, the grooves on the surface close – easy to see for operatives – and must be exchanged. After about eight years of use this has now become necessary in Hamburg Harbour. In the spring of 2020 more than 1,200 m2 of new OIL-EX mats were installed.
